Wrexham FC
For the first time in my adult living memory I haven't looked at the League Table on a Saturday!

Is this a symptom of malaise or the realisation that I've developed other interests outside of the beautiful game?

I could have been one of the superfans traipsing up to Brunton Park a week before christmas, spending god knows how much money watching the "lads" and coming away thinking "what the fck was all that about" at least £35 lighter in the pocket and wondering how I could pay next weeks Phone Rental :)

But thankfully I made the right choice to stop at home and do some long overdue christmas shopping, a week before christmas eve and with pay day still 4 days round the corner!

Therefore all I got was the score at 3.30 off BBC "lets keep the Wrexham fans waiting for an update while some valleys fckwit talks about pontlottyn rugby v meat cleaver heads fiften" WALES.

1 - 1 at Carlisle, nice one I thought that will do. And with Chester losing 2 - 1 to bums Rushden & Diamonds even better!

So I headed home from the mother in laws thinking yes a nice point away will do for me. A journey often mentioned by Les Chamberlain in his weekly Terrace Talk column about coming home from "Shrewsbury" and finding we had won 3 - 0 away at Rochdale in a promotion decider!

Anyhow in I go and turn on the SKY, Carlisle 2 Wrexham 1 a stream of expletives coming from the air.

That's why I am no longer a superfan!

Wrexham till I die and all that but imagine how some of the "mugs" who had travelled up to Brunton Park must feel. Loyal fans and all that, money no object etc but I've said a few times with the away record that we have some of them might have been better off saving their money and giving it to the Trust or failing that hiring a hit man! Preferably one who can hit the target away from home :)

Surely in the long term all that matters now is the dastardly Hamilton away from our club. Not going to Carlisle a week before christmas trying to eke out a win from somewhere. Just having Wrexham FC in the football league next season is going to be a massive bonus whether we are in this division or the one above.

I just wonder what 2006 is in store for our great club, will we win promotion or not. Will be out of existence? Thousands of people in Wrexham and North Wales won't really care that much if we are or not and that's the sad part.

If that was ever to be the case, can you imagine how disheartening it would be for the players to emerge from an away ground with little or no away support whatsoever?
I believe we have one of the best away following in this league or that of League One. Let's keep it that way.
I have given plenty of cash to the trust and I went to Carlisle on Saturday. Granted, there are a few people who won't be getting as many Christmas presents from me now, but thats just tough luck because Wrexham will first and foremost, get my cash first. It's a labour of love.

That's the thing though, away games are a bonus. If people can afford to pay money to do it then fine and it's a boost to the players to see more supporters away from home!

But for one game sometimes I wonder. For instance where do you draw the line. I made this point last summer when we had a friendly away to Hereford. How many times have we been to Hereford over the years!

200 people paying x amount of money, I was thinking would that money be better spent going towards WST?

Who knows.

Then someone else made the comment about the LDV final and 17000 or whatever spending x amounts of pounds, if you total it all up it's a shit load of money that COULD go to other areas! But football and emotions don't work like that. You can't miss out on such a big day for politics sake.

My point is I believe more supporters need to pull their weight. We are quite happy to give our cash to this that and the other club but Wrexham Football Club don't get any direct cash back, it's not like the old days of the gate being split.

As long as supporters pay their money at the turnstile or buy season tickets for home games and throw a few quid towards WST that's enough! If everyone pulled their weight there is a chance Wrexham FC might not be in the predicament it is in now and that includes the whole population of Wrexham County Borough. People in this Borough have a duty to keep professional football alive, if it's not supported then it will die.

This season to be fair the crowds have been quite respectable considering where we are in the league and who we are playing and all that, but we have to balance it out with the fact that the club is in a crisis situation and needs 4000 plus EVERY game anyhow just to survive.

I just wonder how many we would get if we really needed it, if people said you need 10000 for this game to keep in business, would the call be answered? It's bloody frustrating why we can take so many to some games and not to others. But that's football and it happens at all clubs.

I agree with most of what you have written.

The last sentence is a killer. Its true. Just because we're a small club in north wales people don't care about us. If we were in the Premiership in the top 4 do you think we would be getting 4000 a week. I think not

I made the trip to carlisle saturday. I was most dissapointed.

You go to away games with a slight glimmer of hope. it was the 70th minute we were level. I was thinking. "cmon lads only 20 mins not long" and what do we do . Concede a fucking goal. A freezing cold night in the middle of december in Carlisle and we go from 1-0 to 2-1. These things annoy me.

But there something that tells you that you must keep watching them. Wrexham to me is like a drug. it makes me want to go and watch them every week even if we lose. It still edges me on.

Now back to my earlier point

How many people in wrexham 109,000 ??

Ok. How many do we get a home game 4,700? and how many fucking came to the LDV final. 20,000 WHY CANT WE GET THAT?. Because all they fucking want is fame fame fucking fame.

This annoys me, Im not going to write any more. But very good blog. Thanks for that

Jono.

Jono when you say 109000 in Wrexham Borough and we get 4700 or whatever that's still quite a decent average!

Our average crowds to population is pretty good, if you use the figure of Wrexham Town it's one of the best in the whole league, this was done on a survey many years ago and we came out very highly.

But if you include the whole Wrexham catchment area which is hard to work out then it's more complicated!

The LDV Final was a one off game, that was the biggest game we had played in our history at that time and drew so many people out who probably have never even been to a game of football before.

My wife for one! I managed to persuade her to come with me for the game and she enjoyed it but she has now reverted back to showing minimum interest in Wrexham Football Club! Not that she isn't bothered or apathetic but she just isn't interested in football per se.

The people we need to convert are the ones already interested in football but claim to "support" Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. These are the people we need in the ground for a start. We've got a big captive market in the Wrexham area waiting to be untapped but we've also got an ingrained deeply cynical attitude towards Wrexham Football club from some locals that we need to change and it won't happen overnight.

But given input from the Wrexham Supporters Trust and everyone else pulling together I believe we can maintain our support through thick and thin and progress forward. It's not rocket science and finally the penny seems to have dropped. It's taken us going into administration for ideas to come forward.
